Technical philosophy

All our stylists start their career at MAS as a protégé by completing an in-depth 12 to 24 month advanced training program. A protégé undergoes between 700-1000 hours of paid personal hands on education classes before they graduate the program. They are taught to give thorough consultations and demonstrate excellence in over 60 cutting and coloring techniques. Our education is above and beyond any previous education they have. This curriculum was established and refined over the last 40+ years of MAS ownership. It is the heart of who we are. It is all held at MAS, on live models, during their scheduled work week, and taught by MAS’s own experienced education team (Chris, Shannon, Jen, and Sye). This core education enables our experienced team to perform their craft at a high level from the very first day on the floor. 

In the cutting curriculum our stylists are taught to analyze your bone structure, body structure and discuss your lifestyle before making a customized recommendation. The goal is to work with your hair and not against it. Your ideal look will come from how well our stylists have cut your hair not how talented you are with styling it.

In the coloring curriculum our stylists are taught to analyze your skin tone, eye color, natural hair color, existing color, and maintenance schedule. After in depth consultation our stylists are able to provide you with a customized recommendation that will include which technique they are using, and which shades / tones will most enhance your haircut.

Our goal is to continuously elevate the craft of hairdressing. MAS’s commitment to ongoing education can be seen through our bi-annual traveling education curriculum. In the past the team has traveled to Prague, Vienna, London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Rome, New York, Chicago, Santa Monica, Edinburgh, and Brussels. In addition, MAS hosts quarterly in-house advanced education classes to keep the staff on the cutting edge of fashion, trends, and refined techniques.
